The ruling on one whose father compels him to marry a specific girl
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
My father, may Allah forgive him, is forcing me to marry my deceased brother's daughter. I do not desire her in marriage, and I do not know of any religious defect in her, but my soul does not accept her. Will I be undutiful to my parents if I refuse and take someone else?
Answer:
If it is facilitated for you to obey your father, perhaps Allah will make good in it, and perhaps Allah will write affection between you and her. This is better and more beautiful; you respond to your father's call and obey his command, and perhaps Allah will make much good in that. Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Nisa: 19]. So a believer does not know; he may dislike something or be repelled by something, and yet there is good in it for him. Obedience to your father is among the most important of the nearnesses and acts of obedience, and it becomes obligatory if it is in what is right, and if there is benefit for him and interest for him.
So you should respond to his call, answer his request, and marry her. Perhaps Allah will make much good in this. If she does not suit you, you are excused after that if you divorce her and seek someone else. And if Allah places love in your heart, praise be to Allah.
What I advise is that you respond to your father's call and his request, and that you marry your cousin's daughter as long as you do not know of a barrier in her. This is better, if Allah wills, for everyone.
