The Ruling on a Son’s Obedience to His Parents in Marrying Someone He Does Not Desire

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
السؤال:
He says: Does a young man have the right to choose his life partner himself, or do his parents force him to take a specific girl? For example, my father insists on marrying me to my cousin, but I have no desire for her. Is disobeying one’s parents in this case considered undutifulness to parents? May Allah reward you with good. The sender of this message is the listener (F. A. Q.) from Egypt...?

Answer:
It is not obligatory for you, because marriage is a matter of great significance. If the woman is not suitable for you, it is not obligatory for you to marry her; rather, obedience is only in what is right.
However, you should seek your parents’ permission through kind words and good manners so that you and your parents can find a woman who is suitable for you. Marrying a woman who is not suitable for you and whom you do not want is harmful and brings no benefit; it is a loss.
It is obligatory for your parents not to force you to marry a woman you do not want, and it is obligatory for you to seek their permission and use gentleness with them through kind words so that nothing occurs between you and them of undutifulness to parents, separation, or disagreement. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good and do you good.
