The ruling on one who dies as a monotheist having mixed good and evil deeds

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on a man who dies upon the oneness of Allah, having mixed good deeds with evil ones? Will he be punished in his grave until the Day of Resurrection, or until a known time when the punishment is lifted from him?

Answer:
His case is left to Allah. Allah the Exalted says:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He willsإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
[Surat al-Nisa: 48]. So his case is left to Allah, under His will: if He wills, He will forgive him and pardon him; if He wills, He will punish him with some punishment in the grave and some punishment in the Fire; and if He wills, He will punish him with some and not others . So his case is left to Allah, for He is the One who knows the conditions of His servants . However, he is in danger. Whoever dies upon evil deeds without repenting is in danger in the grave and on the Day of Judgment—may Allah keep us safe.
