Evidence for the Prohibition of Image-Making

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother from Iraq also asks and says: What are the evidences from the Book and the Sunnah regarding the prohibition of images or drawing?

Answer:
Images are prohibited. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the image-makers and said:
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrectionإنهم أشد الناس عذابًا يوم القيامة
Sahih Muslim 2109a
The term "image" refers to the image of an animal; it is not permissible to depict any living creature except out of dire necessity where there is no alternative, such as photographing criminals who harm and damage people so that they can be sought and apprehended. It is also like photographing someone for the sake of public safety, where the state deems it necessary to have an image to prevent forgery. This falls under the category of dire necessity. A person in such a situation is like one who is coerced, so this does not serve as proof for the permissibility of image-making in general. These are matters necessitated by dire necessity. Similarly, if a person cannot obtain his academic certificate from a college or school without a photograph, he is compelled by necessity and is considered like one who is coerced, so that this information he has acquired is not lost to him.
The point is that image-making is a reprehensible act and is prohibited, except when necessitated by dire necessity, in which case the person is considered to be in a state of dire necessity, like one who is coerced. It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of picturesأشد الناس عذابًا يوم القيامة المصورون
Sahih Muslim 2109a
He also said:
He who painted pictures in the world would be compelled to breathe soul in them on the Day of Resurrection, but he would not be able to breathe soul (in them).من صور صورة في الدنيا كلف أن ينفخ فيها الروح يوم القيامة وليس بنافخ
Sahih Muslim 2110b
And he also said (peace and blessings be upon him):
The makers of these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life that which you have created.'إن أصحاب هذه الصور يعذبون يوم القيامة ويقال لهم: أحيوا ما خلقتم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5362Sahih (Darussalam)
.
There is no difference between a three-dimensional image made by machine or by hand, and an image taken by camera; all of them fall under the hadith, and all are prohibited except for the dire necessity mentioned earlier.
