Question:
As for what follows, I have been afflicted with singing. I know that singing is forbidden, but my tongue has become accustomed to it. Every time I restrain myself from it for a little while, I return to it for many reasons, because I am constantly listening to singing. So please advise me on this, may Allah reward you.
Answer:
Singing and musical instruments are a calamity of this time, and something by which people are afflicted in this era. It is obligatory for the believer to strive against his own self, for he finds it on television, on the radio, on some tapes, and so on. He should strive against his self, and the fact that he is accustomed to it is not an excuse for him. He should strive against his self, for this abode is the abode of striving and the abode of action. Therefore, one must strive against the self in everything it is accustomed to from the prohibitions of Allah until he leaves it, just as one must strive against it in performing what Allah has made obligatory. If he were to obey his self, he would not pray Fajr, and if he were to obey his self, he would not pray Zuhr if he were occupied with something else, and if he were to obey his self, he would leave the other obligatory acts, and if he were to obey his self, he would not fast in the summer, and so on.
So striving is necessary, for this abode is the abode of action. One must strive against the self in performing the obligations of Allah, and strive against it in refraining from the prohibitions of Allah. If he is engaged in singing, he must restrain it and strive against it. Striving is necessary. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Naziat: 40-41].
So the matter requires striving. If a person obeys his self and gives it the reins, it will destroy him. So the believer must strive. If he is afflicted with television, he should not listen to anything but what is beneficial from what Allah has permitted, and he should not be lenient in watching, viewing, or listening to what Allah has forbidden. If he is afflicted with the radio, likewise, he should listen to what benefits him and is useful to him, then turn off the radio from what Allah has forbidden. And so it is with the press, and so it is with tapes: he should listen to what benefits him and beware of what harms him. He has no excuse to say, "I am accustomed to this," or, "My self commanded this." No, whoever obeys his self is destroyed: [Yusuf: 53].
