The Description of the Lawful Ablution and What Is Said After It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The anonymous caller (M. A. F.) from al-Qasim says: What is the recommended practice (sunnah) of ablution, O Shaykh? And how does a man prostrate for the prostration of forgetfulness?

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
Ablution is prescribed (mashru') for a person to perform, as Allah explained in His Book, and as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. Allah the Exalted says:
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the anklesيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قُمْتُمْ إِلَى الصَّلاةِ فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ وَأَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 6]. Thus the Lord explained it to the servants, and thus the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did it.
So the recommended practice (sunnah) in ablution, when a person stands up to perform it, is to mention the name of Allah at the beginning, then wash his hands three times, then rinse his mouth and sniff water three times with three handfuls, then wash his face three times; this is the most complete. One time is sufficient if he covers the whole face, but repeating it three times is better. Then he washes his arms three times, including the elbows; this is the perfection. If he washes them twice or once, it is sufficient if he covers them completely. Then he wipes his head and his ears once with water, inserting his fingers into his ears and wiping the outer part of his ears with his thumbs. Then he washes his feet, including the heels, three times. If he washes them twice or once, it is sufficient if he covers the feet completely with the washing, but repeating it three times is better and is the perfection.
And all of this is after cleaning oneself (istinja') if he has urinated or defecated; it is necessary to clean oneself before that. If only wind has come out of him, or he has touched the private parts, or he has eaten camel meat, or something similar, then this is sufficient for ablution, starting with rinsing the mouth and sniffing water.
As for when urination or defecation has occurred, he cleans himself first, then after cleaning himself he performs ablution, meaning: he rinses his mouth, sniffs water, washes his face, and so on until the end. This is what is prescribed (mashru'). And after finishing, he says:
I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, there are no partners for Him. And I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves.أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله، اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين

.
This is what is prescribed (mashru') after ablution. He says:
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله، اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 1:25
It is also recommended (mustahabb) that he say:
Glory be to Thee. O Allah, and I begin with praise of Thee, I testify that there is no god but Thou; I ask Thy pardon, and return to Thee in repentance.سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت أستغفرك اللهم وأتوب إليك
