The Permissibility of Increasing Fasting in Sha'ban and Muharram

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from Palestine asks: "Your Eminence, is there a report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to fast frequently in the months of Sha'ban and Muharram? And are deeds raised to Allah in the month of Sha'ban?"

Answer:
He used to fast in Sha'ban, fasting most of it, as Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed us. He used to fast it except for a little. And it was reported in the narration of Umm Salama that he sometimes fasted all of Sha'ban.
And he said:
The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-Muharramأفضل الصيام بعد رمضان شهر الله المحرم
Sahih Muslim 1163a
, he used to fast Ashura, which is the tenth day of Ashura. And he said in the last of his life:
If I am alive next year, I will fast the ninth and the tenthلئن أدركت عام القابل لأصومن التاسع، والعاشر
meaning: the ninth along with the tenth.
So the sunnah (recommended practice) is to fast Ashura with a day before it or a day after it, the ninth and the tenth, or the tenth and the eleventh; in opposition to the Jews, by his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The most excellent fast after Ramadan is God's month. al-Muharramأفضل الصيام بعد رمضان شهر الله المحرم
Sahih Muslim 1163a
If one fasts the ninth, the tenth, and the eleventh, these three days, this is good and fine. Yes.
