Question:

How authentic is the hadith:
Whoever prays four before Az-Zuhr and four afterرحم الله رجلًا صلى قبل الظهر أربعًا، وبعدها أربعًا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 427Sahih (Darussalam)
? And does this mean something other than the regular voluntary prayers (rawatib)?

Answer:
This hadith is authentic, narrated from Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), the daughter of Abu Sufyan, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever prays four rak'ahs before Zuhr and four after it, Allah (SWT) will forbid him from the Fire.من صلى أربعًا قبل الظهر، وأربعًا بعدها؛ حرمه الله على النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1815Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ahmad and the compilers of the four Sunan collections with a good chain of narration.
As for the hadith
May Allah have mercy on...رحم الله..
, this is regarding the 'Asr prayer:
May Allah mercy on a person who prays four Rak'at before the 'Asr prayer.رحم الله امرأ صلى أربعًا قبل العصر
Bulugh al-Maram 2:263
, and it is also a good hadith.
Praying four rak'ahs before the 'Asr prayer is recommended, but it is not a regular voluntary prayer (rawatib). As for the Dhuhr prayer, the regular voluntary prayers (rawatib) are six: four before it and two after it.
As for four after it, it is not a regular voluntary prayer (rawatib), but it is recommended after it. If one prays two after it and four before it, that is the regular voluntary prayer (rawatib). If one prays four before it and four after it, that is better, and better.
