The Concept of Exaggeration in Religion

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the meaning of exaggeration in religion?

Answer:
Exaggeration in religion means excess. It is said: "The pot boiled over" when it overflowed. Exaggeration means excess. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
beware of exaggeration in religious matters for those who came before you were doomed because of exaggeration in religious mattersإياكم والغلو في الدين، فإنما أهلك من كان قبلكم الغلو في الدين
Sunan Ibn Majah 3029Sahih (Darussalam)
And Allah the Exalted says:
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religionيَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَا تَغْلُوا فِي دِينِكُمْ
[Al-Nisa: 171] meaning do not exaggerate, meaning do not go beyond what Allah has prescribed.
For example, loving the prophets is a right, and loving the righteous is a right. But if one goes beyond this to the point of calling upon them along with Allah, seeking aid from them, or making vows to them, that is injustice. One loves them, obeys Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) in the obedience He has commanded, and follows their path, but we do not go so far as to worship them. No.
Loving the prophets and loving the righteous, but we do not go beyond, we do not exaggerate to the point of making them gods along with Allah. No, but we follow the messengers, our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and we submit to what they brought without exaggeration, without excess. For worship is the right of Allah alone so we do not exaggerate regarding their graves. We do not build mosques on them, nor do we place domes on them, nor do we call upon their inhabitants for aid. This is exaggeration. But we bury them as the Muslims buried them in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and after him, in the ground. We do not raise their graves, nor do we build on them. This is the truth, this is the Shari'ah. If one goes beyond this, it becomes exaggeration.
Exaggeration is sometimes a religious innovation, and sometimes it is shirk (associating partners with Allah). Exaggeration is sometimes a religious innovation. Building on graves, building mosques on them, and building domes on them are innovations. Calling upon them other than Allah, seeking aid from them, and making vows to them is shirk. We ask Allah for safety.
