Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is sorcery? And did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) suffer from sorcery?
Answer:
Sorcery has many types, among which is what is done through knots and blowing, as He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Surat al-Falaq: 4].
And among them is what is achieved through specific medicines and specific acts that the sorcerer binds and performs until he achieves what he desires, with the permission of Allah, as He, the Exalted, said: [al-Baqarah:102].
The methods of sorcerers in what they do of knots and the evil they intend to inflict upon the one being bewitched are many. It may occur through their sorcery, by the permission and decree of Allah, or it may not occur. It is under the permission and will of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He).
Sorcery did occur to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Labid ibn al-A'sam, a Jew, bewitched the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until it was imagined to him that he had done something in his house, when he had not done it. However, it did not affect his intellect, nor his eloquence, nor his message (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him). It only had a slight effect on matters concerning his house, his family, and the like. This is the correct view. This has been established regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in authentic hadiths, and the scholars have affirmed it. Whoever among some of the people of the book denied it has erred. It did occur, but Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) removed it from him and eliminated it from him, and He informed him of its causes until He dealt with it.
