Question:
This is a man whose chest opens up when he makes these supplications. He says: "I ask Allah by His beautiful names and His exalted attributes, and then I say: By the right of Your Messenger, and by the right of every wali (close friend of Allah) You have, my chest opens up." What does the opening of the chest indicate? And is it permissible for me to ask by the right of my Prophet, and my chest opens up, and by the right of the awliya (close friends of Allah)?

Answer:
It is not appropriate to ask in this manner, even if there is a figurative interpretation that the right of the prophets and the right of the callers is that He rewards them, and that rewarding is one of His attributes, as in the hadith: "By the right of the askers, and the right of this path of mine." This is a weak hadith, but its meaning is that their right is to be rewarded, and that is one of His attributes (Exalted and Majestic is He), seeking nearness to Allah through His attributes . And the right of the askers to be answered is one of His attributes (Exalted and Majestic is He), but it is more preferable to leave off seeking nearness in this way and instead seek nearness through His explicit names and clear attributes: "O Allah, I ask You by Your beautiful names, as the Exalted said:
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by themوَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا
[Al-A'raf: 180]. I ask You that You are the All-Hearing, that You are the All-Knowing, that You are the Wise. I ask You by Your knowledge by which You encompassed everything, I ask You by Your wisdom. There is nothing wrong with this."
Q: Is the correct ruling that it is permissible?
A: By the attributes of Allah and His names.
Q: But is the correct ruling regarding his question that it is permissible?
A: This is a matter for consideration; leaving it off is safer. Otherwise, its meaning is correct if his intention is being answered and being rewarded, because rewarding and answering are among the attributes of Allah, and he is asking by His attributes (Exalted and Majestic is He). For this reason, it came in the hadith: "O Allah, I ask You by the right of the askers, and the right of this path of mine." It is a weak hadith, but its meaning is correct if it were authentic, because the right of the askers is to be answered, and the right of walking in obedience to Allah is to be rewarded. And He, the Exalted, is the One who said:
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Meوَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ
[Al-Baqarah: 186]. And He, the Exalted, rewards His righteous servants and gives them reward for their good deeds .
Q: His area is full of graves and worship?
The Shaykh: What does he say in his question?
Q: It is said: May Allah keep you safe. The safest thing is that you leave this off?
The Shaykh: What does he say in his question?
Q: The same question. May Allah keep you safe.
The Shaykh: What does he say? Repeat it.
Q: He says his question is that his chest opens up when he says: "By the right of my awliya (close friends of Allah)," and he means the awliya (close friends of Allah) whose graves are circumambulated in his town?
The Shaykh: He says: "O Allah, I ask You"?
The student: Yes.
The Shaykh: I ask You?
The student: By Your beautiful names and Your exalted attributes.
The Shaykh: He should limit it to this.
Q: And by the right of Your awliya (close friends of Allah) and by the right of Your Prophet.
The Shaykh: No, he should limit it so as not to mislead the common people.
Q: Meaning, from the perspective of precaution, not permissibility?
The Shaykh: He should limit it to His beautiful names and His exalted attributes. This is better; so as not to mislead them into thinking they are right in their shirk (associating partners with Allah).
