Q: Is it permissible for one who supplicates to the Lord of the Worlds to say: By the right of Muhammad upon You?
A: It is not permissible in supplication to say: By the right of Muhammad, nor by the status of Muhammad, nor by the right of the prophets or anyone else; because that is a religious innovation (bid'ah) for which there is no evidence in the scriptural proofs directing to it, and acts of worship are based on specific texts, so nothing is permissible in them except what the pure Shari'ah has indicated, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1718a It is agreed upon as authentic, and in a narration by Muslim: Sahih Muslim 1718b And because that is among the means to shirk (associating partners with Allah) and exaggeration regarding the one through whom nearness is sought.
And what is prescribed (mashru') is seeking nearness to Allah, the Exalted, through His names and attributes, due to the saying of Allah, the Exalted: [Al-A'raf: 180] And likewise seeking nearness through righteous deeds; such as faith in Allah and His Messenger, the oneness of Allah, the Exalted, love of Allah and His Messenger, dutifulness to parents, chastity from what Allah has forbidden, fulfilling trusts, and the like of righteous deeds, due to the saying of Allah: : [Ali 'Imran 3:190] the ones who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: "Our Lord, You did not create this in vain. Exalted are You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire. Our Lord, indeed You will not put to shame those whom You admit to the Fire, and there are no helpers for the wrongdoers. Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith: 'Believe in your Lord,' so we believed. until His saying: [Al-Imran: 190 - 194] And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 16:125 And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Mishkat al-Masabih 2290 And there is an authentic hadith regarding the story of the people of the cave, who were three from those before us. The night and the rain sheltered them in a cave, so a rock slid down and blocked the cave, and they were unable to move it. So they said among themselves: "Nothing will save you from this rock except that you ask Allah by your righteous deeds." So one of them asked his Lord to remove this rock from them by his dutifulness to his parents, and the other sought nearness to his Lord by his chastity from zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) after he had the ability to commit it, and the third sought nearness by fulfilling the trust to its owner after he had increased and grown it; so Allah removed the rock from them and they came out. It was narrated by the two Shaykhs in the two authentic collections from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them
وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَاIndeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

إِنَّكَ لا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَO Allah! I ask you by virtue that I testify that you are Allah; there is no God but You, the one —· the Self Sufficient Master, Who did not beget, and was not begotten, and to whom no one is equal.

اللهم إني أسألك بأن لك الحمد لا إله إلا أنت، المنان، بديع السماوات والأرض، يا ذا الجلال والإكرام، يا حي يا قيوم
