Shaykh Abdul Aziz! The first message in this episode is from one of our brothers. He says: A Sudanese man working in Riyadh, Shaykh Muhammad, our brother, says: There is a custom in our country where a man, when he begins to build a house, slaughters an animal when the construction reaches the roof, or this slaughter is postponed until the building is completed and he intends to move into the house. He invites relatives and neighbors to this slaughter. What is your opinion on this practice? And is there a prescribed action that is preferred to be done before moving into the new house? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. This practice is subject to detailed analysis: If the intention behind the slaughtered animal is to ward off the jinn, or for some other purpose where the owner of the house intends that this slaughter will bring about such and such, or such and such in the house, like the safety of the house or such and such, this is not permissible. Rather, it is a religious innovation. And if it is for the jinn, it is major shirk (associating partners with Allah); because it is worship of other than Allah.
However, if it is in the context of thanking Allah for His blessings, for what Allah granted him by reaching the roof or by completing the house, in the context of thanking Allah for the blessings, gathering his relatives and neighbors and inviting them to this blessing, there is nothing wrong with this. And many people do this in the context of thanking Allah for His blessings, where He has blessed them with building the house and living in the house instead of renting, this is in the context of gratitude, there is nothing wrong with that, as thanks to Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
However, if it is for another purpose, such as warding off the evil of the jinn or other pre-Islamic age of ignorance (jahiliyyah) purposes, it is not permissible. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah bless you. If it is what is known here in the central region, Your Eminence the Shaykh, as al-Nazalah?
The Shaykh: It is like it.
The presenter: Like it?
The Shaykh: Al-Nazalah is for honoring relatives and neighbors and thanking Allah for what He has granted by the completion of the construction, just as people do in a wedding, and just as they do in other matters when they return from a journey. They may slaughter animals and invite relatives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from a journey, would slaughter a camel and invite people, may Allah’s prayers and blessings be upon him. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
