The Ruling on the Sacrifice When Moving into a New House

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is slaughtering before a person enters his apartment or new house, at the door, and smearing the door with blood, a form of optimism and good, or is it a form of pessimism? I intend by this to ward off evil and the jinn from this house, and to express gratitude to Allah and thanks for His blessing.

Answer:
This is a matter of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. The people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to slaughter when moving into a house; they would slaughter... at the door, or at... the walls, and at the wells, saying: this is to ward off the jinn and the evil of the jinn. They would slaughter for the jinn, seeking nearness to them so that they would ward off their evil, as they claimed. This is major shirk, and may Allah protect us from it. This is not permissible; this is a denunciation, and it is never permissible. Rather, it is a denunciation and one of the deeds of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance—may Allah protect us from it. It has been narrated from the Prophet that he forbade the slaughtering for the jinn.
The point is: this is slaughtering for other than Allah. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
[Al-Kawthar:2] And He says:
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrificeقُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي
[Al-An'am 6:162]
meaning my slaughter
my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝
[Al-An'am 6:162]
is for none other than Him [Al-An'am:162, 163]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed him who sacrificed for anyone besides Allahلعن الله من ذبح لغير الله
Sahih Muslim 1978b
And this is for the one who slaughters at the doors. Even if his intention in the slaughter is the face of Allah, it is a means to shirk and a custom of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance that he is reviving, so this is not permissible. However, if he gathers his relatives and neighbors after he moves in, and gathers them for food, thanking Allah for what He has bestowed upon him in the dwelling of the house he rented, or bought, or built, there is nothing wrong with this if he gathers them for a sacrifice, or less, or more, his neighbors and relatives, as thanks to Allah; there is nothing wrong with it.
Is it called a festival?

Answer: It is not called a festival. This is merely thanks to Allah for making the house easy for him. There are no festivals except the Festival of Sacrifice and the Festival of Breaking the Fast. These are the festivals of the Muslims; there are no other festivals.

Question: ... the al-Nazalah?

Answer: They call this al-Nazalah. This al-Nazalah is permissible; there is nothing wrong with it.
