Ruling on the zakah of money saved from the monthly salary

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We begin first with a letter from Muhammad Jasim Muhammad, from Iraq, Baghdad, in which he says: I am an employee and I have a monthly salary. Do I have to pay zakah? That is, is there zakah on the monthly salary, and what is its amount? Please note that my salary is about one hundred Iraqi dinars. May Allah guide you.
The Shaykh: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
To proceed: There is no doubt that there is zakah in salaries if a lunar year has passed over them. A person’s salary, whether in dinars, dollars, dirhams, or pounds, zakah is due on all types of work if a lunar year has passed over them. So, if a lunar year has passed over your salary—O questioner—if you have saved money from it and a lunar year has passed over it, then zakah is obligatory on it: one quarter of a tenth, meaning one dinar from every forty dinars. However, if you spend your salary when it is received and nothing remains with you from it, then you do not owe zakah. Zakah is only due on what a lunar year has passed over. If an amount from your salary accumulates that reaches the nisab (minimum threshold for zakah) and a lunar year has passed over it, then zakah is obligatory on you. But if you do not keep anything from it, rather you spend it when it is received, then there is no zakah on that. Yes.
