The Hijab of the Elderly Woman

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother (A. S.) also asks—may the Shaykh be respected—and says: What is your opinion regarding the hijab of elderly women? Is it the same as for other women, or not?
Answer: Allah has shown leniency to the elderly women and excused them, provided they do not hope for marriage and do not display their adornment, just as the Exalted and Majestic said:
And women of post-menstrual age who have no desire for marriage - there is no blame upon them for putting aside their outer garments [but] not displaying adornment. But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[Surat al-Nur: 60]. The *qawa'id* are the old women of advanced age
who have no desire for marriageاللَّاتِي لا يَرْجُونَ نِكَاحًا
[An-Nur 24:60]
who have no desire for marriage due to their old age and weakness of strength. Allah said:
there is no blame upon themفَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ
[An-Nur 24:60]
meaning: there is no blame
for putting aside their outer garmentsأَنْ يَضَعْنَ ثِيَابَهُنَّ
[An-Nur 24:60]
meaning: that they uncover their faces and hands, because people have no desire for them and men have no hope for them, on the condition that they are not displaying their adornment, on the condition that they are not displaying their adornment, meaning: they do not wear beautiful clothes and do not attend to this matter like applying kohl and beautifying the face, and wearing beautiful clothes. If they do that, then they are sinful, and it is not permissible for them to uncover; they must cover themselves and observe the hijab.
As for if they do not display their adornment, but their state is ordinary, the face is ordinary and the clothing is ordinary, the clothing is ordinary, then there is no harm in uncovering due to the lack of desire for them. However, not uncovering is better, even if they are elderly, even if they are not displaying their adornment, and even if they do not hope for marriage, because their modesty is more appropriate. For this reason, He said:
But to modestly refrain [from that] is better for themوَأَنْ يَسْتَعْفِفْنَ خَيْرٌ لَهُنَّ
[An-Nur 24:60]
meaning: and that they should be modest and not display anything except what Allah has permitted to be displayed, such as the outer garments. This is not a problem. This is better for them and is the best for them. Yes.
