Forgiveness and Pardon Are Among the Traits of the Noble

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Sister (N.D.) al-Sabai from Makkah al-Mukarramah wrote a long letter about a dispute that arose between her and her brother. I ask you, may Allah reward you with good, to offer advice to siblings when there is a disagreement between them?
Answer: Yes, it is prescribed for relatives and for brothers in Allah, when there is something that causes enmity and dispute, to fear Allah, to strive to resolve the problems between them through lawful means, and to strive to forgive and pardon the right of each one over his brother, until the hearts unite, until affection is complete, and until cooperation in good is achieved. This is how it should be for every believer, male and female. Allah the Exalted says:
And to forego it is nearer to righteousnessوَأَنْ تَعْفُوا أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَى
[al-Baqarah: 237], and He says: :
but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allahفَمَنْ عَفَا وَأَصْلَحَ فَأَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ
[al-Shura: 40], and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honorما زاد الله عبدًا بعفو إلا عزًا
Sahih Muslim 2588
. So tolerance and pardoning part of the right is a characteristic of the noble, and of the morals of the distinguished, the noble, the literary, and those who desire what is with Allah . It is not permissible to boycott one another, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not envy one another, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another, do not deceive one another, and do not undercut one another’s sales. Be the servants of Allah, brothers. The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim; he does not wrong him, does not look down on him, does not lie to him, and does not abandon him.
the hadith. So boycotting is a prohibited matter because of the evil it leads to, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no boycotting for more than three daysلا هجرة فوق ثلاث
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 63:255
and in another hadith:
It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.لا يحل لمسلم أن يهجر أخاه فوق ثلاث يلتقيان فيعرض هذا ويعرض هذا، وخيرهما الذي يبدأ بالسلام
Sahih Muslim 2560a
. So the issues that occur between brothers, between families, and between neighbors must be resolved by the means that Allah Mighty and Majestic approves. If it is due to a word, let the one who said it seek forgiveness from its owner—whether it was a lie, an insult, backbiting, or the like. And if the enmity is due to money in the debt of one of them to the other, let him strive to pay the money and discharge the debt, or let them pardon part of it, or let them bear it among themselves, share it, and pay it off for him. All of this is among the traits of the noble. And if there is something else, likewise, let them strive to remove it or forgive it, or settle it if it is money. So the result is that it should be that families, neighbors, and friends do not obey Satan in stirring up enmity between them, in planting its roots, and in its continuation, but rather they should fight it. Indeed, they must fight it with all the strength they can until the waters return to their channels, until the hearts return to their state, and until affection prevails among everyone. May Allah grant success and guidance.
