The ruling on raising the voice at the funeral, and on instruction and the call to prayer at the burial
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother asks and says: We have old customs, and many people still follow these customs, which are: seeking forgiveness and saying the declaration of oneness with a drone and hymns when carrying the deceased, and they call this: the testimony. They also recite the Qur'an during the burial of the deceased, and perform the call to prayer over him, and when the burial is finished, one of them stands at his head and says to him—meaning: addressing the deceased—if such and such comes to you, say such and such.
So what is your opinion on that, may Allah reward you?
Answer:
All of these are religious innovations with no basis. The Sunnah with the funeral is: reflection, lowering the voice, and contemplating the fate of the deceased, and what will be said to him? And what will he answer? And remembering this great matter; because you are going to what he has gone to.
So the believer should be aware of this great matter.
And the Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them) used to lower their voices, and they did not speak with a raised voice in such a situation with the funerals, rather they lowered their voices, and they did not speak except with reflection, looking, and admonition, reminding people of good, and calling them to good.
As for "Unite him," or "There is no god but Allah," and "Glory be to Allah" with raised voices, this is no, it is not prescribed, rather this is between the person and himself.
Likewise the call to prayer at the grave: that he sits in the grave itself, or at the grave, or establishes the call at the grave, or in the grave itself; this is also an innovation, or he reads the Qur'an in it, this is an innovation, there is no basis for that, not in the grave itself, nor at the grave, all of this is from the innovations.
And the graveyards are not like the mosques, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 777a; this indicates that the graves are not prayed at, nor is the Qur'an read at them, they are not like the mosques.
Likewise the instruction: that he stands at his head after the burial and says: say such and such, say such and such, if the angel asks you about such and such, say such and such. They call it: instruction, and they say: remember what you came out of the world with; that you testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and that you are pleased with Allah as Lord, and with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad as Prophet, and with the Qur'an as guide, and so on of what they say; this has no basis, fabricated reports have come about it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with no basis, some of the people of Sham did it as a group mentioned, but their action is not a proof, nor is that of other people, the proof is in what Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and in what the Companions agreed upon, as for the saying of some of the later people from the Tabi'un, or the followers of the Tabi'un, if they choose something, or see something, it does not become a proof for the people, nor does it become religion, the religion is what Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) legislated, and what Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded. Yes.
