The Ruling on Borrowing Money for the Purpose of Marriage

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I married my uncle’s daughter, and he made it a condition that I pay one hundred thousand riyals. What should I do? Should I give up the marriage, or what?

Answer:
I heard you, my brother. If the uncle made it a condition that you pay one hundred thousand riyals, and if it is easy for you to obtain the hundred thousand, even by borrowing or by taking on debt, then do it. Borrow or take a loan, and seek help from Allah. If it is not easy for you, do not burden yourself with what you cannot bear.
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacityلاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللّهُ نَفْساً إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا
[al-Baqarah:286]
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[al-Taghabun:16] And if he dies, Allah will pay it off for him.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever takes the money of the people with the intention of repaying it, Allah will repay it on his behalfمن أخذ أموال الناس يريد أداءها؛ أدى الله عنه
Sahih al-Bukhari 2387
So whoever takes people’s money by loan or debt, with the intention of repaying it, wanting to marry and remain chaste, or wanting to establish a home for himself, or something similar to that in terms of benefit, there is no blame on him, and Allah will pay it off for him.
