Question:
Your Eminence, may Allah have mercy on you, the one who is currently warning against marrying a man who already has a wife—is this considered limiting the population, limiting the offspring of the Ummah? And is this permissible in this form?
Answer:
What some people have done is greater than the issue of limiting the population. This is contrary to the Shari'ah of Allah. Those who warn against marrying a man who has married more than one woman are opposing the Shari'ah of Allah, and their action is reprehensible—may Allah grant us safety. They are against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and against the Qur'an. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has permitted us to marry two, three, or four women, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted that, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) married several women, peace and blessings be upon him.
So those who fight against the plurality of women and men are opposing the Shari'ah, and it is feared that they will sever themselves from the religion—may we seek refuge in Allah. It is feared that in this matter they will be severed from the religion of Allah because of their hatred of what Allah has prescribed, and because of their claim that it harms society, or other things they claim. So I fear for these people that they will apostatize from their religion without realizing it; because they oppose the Shari'ah of Allah, they oppose the Book of Allah, and they oppose the Messenger of Allah. This is a great evil.
And the obligatory thing is to call to justice, and that if a man marries two, or three, he is just, and he fulfills the obligation. It is not permissible to have multiple wives if he wrongs the women, and does not treat them justly. As for the type of marriage with two, three, or four, it is a prescribed matter, and there is no harm in it. And it is upon him to be just, and to seek justice in that. In it is the increase of chastity for private parts, the increase of offspring, the protection of women, and the chastity of men. All of this is a sought-after matter.
And people today are in great danger. And some people today, people refrain from marrying them, and do not desire to marry them, because of the corruption known from them, and the consumption of intoxicants, and the neglect of prayer. Many of the young men today, people have lost interest in them, and do not desire to give them their daughters. And they would have liked to marry them, were it not for the vile characteristics they are afflicted with. So if a young man—may we seek refuge in Allah—falls into lewd acts, and becomes known for that, or in intoxicants and drunkenness—may Allah grant us safety—or in abandoning prayer, who will marry him? Who will desire him when he knows his bad state—may Allah grant us safety? So whoever wants to be married, and whoever wants to look into his case, even without money, with a little money; it is upon him to fear Allah, and it is upon him to protect his honor from what Allah has forbidden, and to be upright upon the religion of Allah. So all people of goodness are with him, and they would like to marry him.
And likewise, some women are also afflicted with losing interest in marriage, and making excuses for accepting marriage because of jobs, teaching, and study. And this is a mistake from them. This is a mistake. For what is required of study is that she knows her religion, and that she understands her religion. And it is upon her to marry, and to be chaste herself, and to make others chaste. And if the study continues; there is no harm. Or teaching. And if that is not facilitated; there is no harm.
And it is not permissible to postpone marriage until after university, or to an unlimited time; because she is in need of a job, in need of this, in need of that. It is befitting for her family to cooperate with her in getting married. And perhaps the husband will agree to her remaining in study, or in teaching; so two benefits are obtained: marriage and study, marriage and teaching.
So if that is not facilitated, and the husband refuses except that she leaves study, or teaching; there is no preventer if she has studied—by the praise of Allah—the intermediate level, or the secondary intermediate level. She has obtained much good, and she has known her religion, so she marries.
Then after this, she occupies herself with reading in beneficial books, and asking about what is difficult for her. Or her husband permits her after this to do supplementary study in the university. All of this is possible.
As for leaving marriage, and making excuses with jobs, and making excuses with teaching, and making excuses with study until many years pass over her, and perhaps her youth goes away and she is in this state, this is a matter in which there is great danger.
