How to Get Rid of the Disease of Envy

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
How does a person get rid of envy, since it is a serious disease for a person?

Answer:
When a person is afflicted with envy and the desire for the blessing to be removed from his brother, he should consider that Allah, the Exalted, is the Bestower. That is, he should think and look to Allah, who gave his brother this, and gave this person that, and gave the other one something else. So let him look and see that his envy harms only himself, not the others.
Allah is the Giver and the Withholder (Exalted and Majestic is He), so his envy of his brother harms him, and it angers Allah. It does not harm the one who was bestowed upon, but rather it harms the one who is envious. So the envious person has only harmed himself; let him think and look! So let him review himself and know that he is wronging himself, and that he is complaining against Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) in His actions and His kindness to His servants. So let him regret it and seek forgiveness from his Lord, and let him thank Allah for what He, the Exalted, has given him, and let him pray for his brother for success and guidance, and that he be guided to spend the blessings in obedience to the Master (Exalted and Majestic is He).
As for his complaint against his brother and his envy of him, it is in reality a wrong from him, an aggression upon himself, and a complaint against Allah. So it is not permissible for him to do that; rather, he should hasten to repent from it and seek forgiveness for it, and ask his Lord for guidance and success, and praise his Lord for what He has given him, and ask...
