Ruling on going to sorcerers and fortune-tellers for the purpose of treatment

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on going to sorcerers and fortune-tellers for the purpose of treatment if one is compelled to do so?

A: It is not permissible to go to fortune-tellers, sorcerers, or magicians, nor to ask them questions. Rather, they must be warned, their hands must be restrained, and they must be prevented from doing so; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين ليلة
Sahih Muslim 2230
narrated by Muslim. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a diviner and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)من أتى كاهنًا أو عرافًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أنزل على محمد ﷺ
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741
, and when asked about fortune-tellers, he said:
Do not go to themلا تأتوهم
.
Fortune-tellers claim knowledge of the unseen through their devils, so it is not permissible to go to fortune-tellers or diviners, nor to ask them about anything. Rather, it is obligatory to disapprove of them and to discipline them until they do not return to any of that. However, one should go to people of good who are known for the Shari'ah-prescribed ruqyah, and have them perform the ruqyah.
