Ruling on Visiting Sorcerers and Diviners

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message received from the questioner, Abd al-Khalif Muhammad, from Iraq. He says in his message: I was unaware, and I found that sorcery had been performed on me and my wife to drive us out of our home; because they say: this house is haunted and contains devils. So I went to a master from among the masters of the people of religion, and he revealed the situation for my family and my house. He told me: They performed sorcery on you, and its cost was two hundred and fifty dinars. Is this true? I found a long piece of paper written in blue from him. I went to this master, and he removed it and took twenty dinars from me, and said that nothing had come to the house. Will I be sinful for what I did, or not?
Answer: It is not permissible to ask sorcerers, fortune-tellers, or diviners, nor to believe what they say. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافاً فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين يوماً
Sahih Muslim 2230
Narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. The diviner is the one who claims to know matters through the unseen and fortune-telling. Likewise, the fortune-teller is the one who has a vision from the jinn, or a companion from the jinn who informs him of some hidden matters that he hears from people in far or near lands, or hears when he eavesdrops on the sky. So these people are not to be asked, nor believed. Likewise, the sorcerers: they are those who engage in matters by which they harm people. Sorcery has an existence and a reality, and some of it is illusion, but some of it has a reality that kills, sickens, and separates a person from his wife. So it is not permissible to ask sorcerers, nor believe them, nor seek treatment from them. But you treat the illness with known doctors, or by reciting the Qur'an. The Qur'an and the verses of sorcery are recited over you, and he blows over you, or over water that you drink and wash with; there is no harm in that.
As for those known for sorcery, and those known for practicing sorcery or fortune-telling or divination which involves claiming knowledge of the unseen, all of this is not permissible. It is not permissible to ask any of them, nor to believe them.
And you must repent to Allah for asking this sorcerer. And you must use permissible medicines and permissible medicine. Among that is that you, or some good brothers with good creed, recite over water. He recites for you al-Fatihah, the Verse of the Throne, and
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قل هو الله أحد
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1]
and the two chapters of protection (al-Mu'awwidhatayn), and the verses of sorcery found in Surat al-A'raf, and in Surat Yunus, and in Surat Ta-Ha. He recites them in the water, then you drink from that water and wash with the rest. This is, by the permission of Allah, a treatment for what may occur of sorcery. And seven leaves of green sidr (date palm) may be put in it, crushed and placed in the water, and this is also from the category of permissible medicine and treatment, because it is tested and beneficial for the one affected by sorcery, and for the one prevented from his wife for reasons. So this is the Shari'ah treatment by reciting al-Fatihah, the Verse of the Throne, and the known verses of sorcery in Surat al-A'raf, Surat Yunus, Surat Ta-Ha, and
Say: O you disbelievers!قل يا أيها الكافرون
, and
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قل هو الله أحد
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1]
and the two chapters of protection. It is recited in the water, with the sidr, or without sidr, then the person drinks from it and the one affected by sorcery, or the one prevented from his wife, washes with it. Then he is cured by the permission of Allah . And if he blows over it with this:
"Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adhhibil-ba'sa, washfi, Antash-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifaan la yughadiru saqaman [O Allah! the Rubb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease]اللهم رب الناس، أذهب البأس، واشف أنت الشافي، لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك، شفاءً لا يغادر سقماً
Riyad as-Salihin 902
, and repeats this three times, that is good. These are good supplications established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
"Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adhhibil-ba'sa, washfi, Antash-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifaan la yughadiru saqaman [O Allah! the Rubb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease]اللهم رب الناس، أذهب البأس، واشف أنت الشافي لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك، شفاء لا يغادر سقماً
Riyad as-Salihin 902
.
And likewise the known supplication:
In the name of Allah I exorcise you from everything and safeguard you from every evil that may harm you and from the eye of a jealous one. Allah would cure you and I invoke the name of Allah for you.باسم الله أرقيك، من كل شيء يؤذيك، ومن شر كل نفس أو عين حاسد، الله يشفيك، باسم الله أرقيك
Sahih Muslim 2186
three times. This is also established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So if he blows this into the water, it is also good and one of the causes of healing, and it is Prophetic treatment, Shari'ah treatment. The first supplication:
"Allahumma Rabban-nasi, adhhibil-ba'sa, washfi, Antash-Shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uka, shifaan la yughadiru saqaman [O Allah! the Rubb of mankind! Remove this disease and cure (him or her)! You are the Great Curer. There is no cure but through You, which leaves behind no disease]اللهم رب الناس أذهب البأس، واشف أنت الشافي، لا شفاء إلا شفاؤك، شفاء لا يغادر سقماً
Riyad as-Salihin 902
.
And the second supplication:
In the name of Allah I exorcise you from everything and safeguard you from every evil that may harm you and from the eye of a jealous one. Allah would cure you and I invoke the name of Allah for you.باسم الله أرقيك، من كل شيء يؤذيك، ومن شر كل نفس أو عين حاسد، الله يشفيك، باسم الله أرقيك
Sahih Muslim 2186
he says it three times.
This is from the good supplication in which benefit is hoped for. And Allah is the Helper. Yes, along with asking Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)... the person asks his Lord that Allah grants him healing... he humbles himself to Allah in his prostration, and in the last of the tashahhud, between the adhan and the iqamah, in the last of the night, in all times, he supplicates to his Lord, asks Him, and humbles himself to Him that Allah heals him from what has befallen him, and removes from him what harm he has. And Allah loves those who ask, (Glorified and Exalted is He), and He is the One who said, (Glorified is He):
Call upon Me; I will respond to you.ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ
[Ghafir: 60]. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
