Question: A young Muslim man wants to marry a girl, but he does not know whether she prays or not. Is this marriage permissible? What is the ruling on this? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: It is obligatory to be certain about the matter and to ask those who are knowledgeable about her. If the marriage is to a disbeliever who is not from the People of the Book, it is not permissible. Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Mumtahanah: 10].
Whoever abandons prayer commits disbelief according to the correct opinion of the scholars, even if he acknowledges its obligation. If he abandons it out of negligence and laziness, he commits disbelief by doing so, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam), recorded by Imam Ahmad and the people of the four Sunan collections with a sound chain. Therefore, if she does not pray, it is not permissible for him to marry her until she repents, based on the two previous hadiths. It is prescribed for the Muslim to strive to seek a woman who is good in her religion, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Bulugh al-Maram 8:5, agreed upon for its authenticity.

العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفرA woman is married for four qualities, for her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion: so get the religious one and prosper.
تنكح المرأة لأربع: لمالها، ولجمالها، ولحسبها، ولدينها، فاظفر بذات الدين تربت يداك
