The Cause of Women’s Tabarruj (Display of Adornment) and Uncovering

Question:
Tabarruj (display of adornment) has become widespread in these days, where a woman is found in the company of a driver, uncovered and without a mahram (a relative one may not marry). Likewise, there is much ingenuity in clothing and hijab (the covering prescribed for women); one sees a woman wearing tight clothes at the opening so that her legs can be seen. As for the jilbab (the outer garment), it is placed either on the shoulders or at the back of the head so that her head is exposed?

Answer:
This is what is astonishing, O brothers. This is what is astonishing. The good is astonishing. People today have become mixed up; the right and the wrong have been mixed, the disbeliever with the Muslim, and the good with the bad. Disbelievers have come to our lands, as workers and non-workers, and many have traveled to the lands of disbelief, and they and their wives have seen what is there. Consequently, this great laxity has resulted, along with weak faith, great ignorance, weak religion, and much open sinfulness.
All of this is among the effects of mixing with disbelievers and others, and with open sinners and others, and among the effects of ignorance and lack of knowledge in religion. Therefore, the woman has uncovered her face, mixed with men, and exposed parts of her body. All of this is due to the causes of mixing, weak religion, lack of insight, traveling abroad, and mixing with open sinners and disbelievers. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
The obligatory thing is to take care. It is not astonishing how the perished perished, but it is astonishing how the one who was saved was saved! The important thing is salvation. The important thing is salvation. When the disease becomes widespread and plagues multiply, the danger is great. But treatment is obligatory. Every Muslim must be cautious. He must seek treatment so that perhaps he may be saved, so that perhaps he and his community and his family may be saved. Otherwise, the danger is great and sudden. You all know this.
What has occurred today of mixing, and the increase of evildoers, and the increase of disbelievers, and the increase of open sinners, and what is broadcast and published in magazines and newspapers inside and outside, and in neighboring countries, and elsewhere, is a cumulative affliction and accumulated evils. It must be treated, and the believer and his family must strive to be saved from it and to be safe from it.
It is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: meaning the path of those before you. So people today have followed the path of those before them from the Jews, the Christians, the Buddhists, the mushrikin (one who associates partners with Allah), and others. They have taken their path, following their deeds and their morals until they do like them, except for whom Allah guides, except for whom Allah wills. This is the state of people today. For a long time, Muslims have been imitating others, except for whom Allah guides. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.
