The ruling on men entering among women at wedding occasions
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We ask your Eminence to advise us regarding what happens in the city of Jizan. When they have a wedding occasion, or a circumcision ceremony, they bring in men who play drums, and they call them "muzalifin." These men drum in the midst of the women, and the women scatter money on them, and they dance without any shame of Allah?
Answer:
This has already been explained to them, and it has been written to them regarding this matter. The preachers there are tasked with explaining this, and we ask Allah to guide everyone.
Many people may hear the advice but not pay attention to it, and they consider the custom they have become accustomed to to be something obligatory, prioritizing it over what Allah and His Messenger said. Have the Messengers and the reformers ever been opposed except by harmful customs, customs that contradict the Shari'ah? It was the customs of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance that the Messengers were opposed by, and it was by these that the reformers were opposed.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the Muslim to distance himself from the bad custom that contradicts the Shari'ah, and not to be deceived by what his predecessors did if it is something invalid. Customs are not to be cited as evidence; rather, they are to be presented to the scriptural proofs. If they align with the proofs, they are adopted; otherwise, they must be discarded, even if they were the custom of the fathers and predecessors.
Nor should a person of sound mind be like what the ignorant disbelievers said: [Surah al-Zukhruf: 23] This is the argument the disbelievers used against the Messengers. [Surah al-Zukhruf: 23] This is a refuted, invalid argument. It is not permissible for any Muslim to cite it as evidence. Rather, he must present whatever is unclear to him to the scriptural proofs, and ask the people of knowledge about the Shari'ah regarding it. He should not say, "This is my father's custom, or my grandfather's, or the custom of my people," and be content with that, even if it contradicts the Shari'ah.
Question : The common people: I said, "You write to them," and I was on my way to my family's home and found that they are still in their state, and even worse?
Answer: Even if, several letters reached them regarding this, and the preachers read them to them, but customs, as it is said, are overpowering. Few are the ones who abandon them. We ask for safety, we ask Allah to guide us and them.
