The Means of Attaining Khushu' in Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What are some of the means that help one attain khushu' in prayer and perform it with tranquility, and also in accordance with the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?

Answer:
Answer: The things that lead to khushu' in prayer are: First, seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan after the opening takbir; this drives Shaytan away from you and drives away waswasah (whispers) by the permission of Allah. Second: do not enter into prayer while something is distracting you from khushu', such as entering while you have an urge to urinate or are holding in your stool. Rather, relieve yourself of these things, perform wudu', and enter into prayer while you are free from them. Likewise, do not enter into prayer in the presence of food, or in the presence of the evening meal. Begin with the evening meal before the prayer so that you may be free for your prayer and your soul is not attached to the food. Avoid other such distractions, and enter into prayer with a clear mind, turning to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
