Question:
We begin with the exegesis of the blessed verses, the last ones in Surah al-A'la, in the saying of the Truth—Blessed and Exalted is He—I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan: {Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies himself (14); and remembers the name of his Lord and prays (15); but you prefer the life of this world (16) and the Hereafter is better and more lasting (17) Indeed, this is in the former scriptures (18) the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa (19) [al-A'la].
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Allah—Exalted and Majestic—said: {Indeed, he has succeeded who purifies himself (14); and remembers the name of his Lord and prays (15)}. (Succeeded): Success is the opposite of loss; success is victory and salvation, so it is a comprehensive term. (Who purifies himself) means he purified his soul from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and sins. (And remembers the name of his Lord): He remembers the name of his Lord. The remembrance of Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—is a great act of worship, and Allah—Exalted and Majestic—commanded it in many verses: "Remember Allah with much remembrance (41) and glorify Him in the morning and in the evening (42)" [al-Ahzab]. The remembrance of Allah is done with the tongue, by praising Allah with His names, attributes, and blessings. It is also done with the heart, through belief and faith. It is also done with actions, so prayer is a remembrance of Allah—Mighty and Majestic. He said: "And establish prayer, indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater" [al-Ankabut 45]. Prayer is a remembrance of Allah—Mighty and Majestic—and it contains praise of Allah, so it is a remembrance of Allah—Mighty and Majestic. (And remembers the name of his Lord): Allah—Exalted and Majestic—is remembered and praised with His names and attributes. (Name) here is a dependent noun that includes all the names of Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—because when a singular noun is made dependent, it becomes general. (And prays): He prays the obligatory prayers and the recommended prayers, because prayer is a connection between the servant and his Lord—Mighty and Majestic—so it is the greatest of the types of worship. For this reason, it came after the two testimonies of faith; it is the second pillar of the pillars of Islam. (And remembers the name of his Lord and prays). Then He said, Exalted and Majestic: (But you prefer the life of this world). Some people are heedless of the remembrance of Allah, heedless of prayer, and occupied with this world, even though this world is a mount for the Hereafter, and a farm for the Hereafter for whoever utilizes it in obedience to Allah and uses it to assist in worshipping Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He. He combines prayer, remembrance, and seeking sustenance. "Indeed, those whom you worship besides Allah cannot give you sustenance, so seek from Allah the sustenance and worship Him" [al-Ankabut 17]. "And when the prayer is completed, then disperse in the land and seek from the bounty of Allah and remember Allah much that you may succeed" [al-Jumu'ah 10]. This is the methodology upon which the Muslim proceeds. As for the one who prefers the life of this world, he is a loser. This world will vanish, and the Hereafter is approaching. Wealth and money will vanish, and nothing remains except righteous deeds by which he exits this world. (But you prefer the life of this world) this is from the category of condemnation. Then He said, Exalted and Majestic, comparing between this world and the Hereafter: (And the Hereafter is better) than this world, (and more lasting) than it, because the Hereafter is permanent and eternal, and this world is transient. (But you prefer the life of this world, and the Hereafter is better and more lasting). Then He said, Exalted and Majestic: (Indeed, this) what was mentioned in this surah, from its beginning to its end, Surah al-A'la, (Indeed, this is in the former scriptures) is mentioned in the former sheets and books before the Qur'an. (Indeed, this is in the former scriptures, the scriptures of Ibrahim) the Intimate Friend of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—and Musa, the one who spoke to Allah. These are the best of the prophets after Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So Allah—Exalted and Majestic—included in this great surah what is in the former scriptures, and this is from His grace upon this Ummah (the Muslim community). So praise and thanks be to Allah.
