Is the intended meaning of His saying, the Exalted: ((in the path of Allah)) only Hajj and jihad, or does it include 'Umrah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I asked, and it is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
for the cause of Allah وَفِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
What is the intended meaning? He said: It is only jihad and Hajj.
The student : Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : Peace be upon you and upon you all...

The questioner : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

The questioner : I mean... I mean, what is the evidence? Hajj has texts. I will mention, for example, 'Umrah, meaning 'Umrah alone.

The Shaykh : Because it is part of Hajj. What is the difference between an 'Umrah separated from Hajj, which is part of tamattu', and an 'Umrah that is not with Hajj? That is 'Umrah.

The questioner : It is 'Umrah.

The Shaykh : The one who wants to perform tamattu' must perform 'Umrah before Hajj and then exit the state of ihram.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : It is a separate 'Umrah.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Then he performs Hajj.

The questioner : Then we say, no problem, our Shaykh, meaning one can imagine Hajj without 'Umrah.

The Shaykh : No, one must imagine the opposite: 'Umrah without Hajj.

The questioner : That is not my question. I have no problem with 'Umrah without Hajj being in the path of Allah as well?

The Shaykh : Yes, we say that the one who performs Hajj al-Tamattu' performs 'Umrah first and separates Hajj from 'Umrah.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : So this becomes a separate 'Umrah, but legally it is linked to Hajj for the sake of tamattu'.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Well, then is there no difference between this 'Umrah and an 'Umrah, for example, in Muharram, in Safar, and so on?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : It does not appear that this is the difference that might occur to some minds. Yes, there is nothing but this.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And may Allah protect you, if Allah wills.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah.
