The state of the Salaf in welcoming the entry of the month of Ramadan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q235: The questioner asks: Is there a report that the Salaf and the Tabi'un used to celebrate upon the entry of the month of Ramadan? What is prescribed upon the entry of the first night of this blessed month? And is there a specific supplication for welcoming the month?
A235: The righteous Salaf did not innovate celebrations for the occasion of the entry of the month of Ramadan, nor for the occasion of the Night of Decree. Rather, they rejoiced at the entry of the month of Ramadan and hastened to perform righteous deeds in it, such as fasting, standing in night prayer, giving charity, reciting the Qur'an, and other such acts. They welcomed the entry of the month of Ramadan with joy for the sake of righteous deeds, because deeds in it are better
and multiplied in reward with Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). As for celebrating occasions, this was not reported except for 'Id al-Fitr and 'Id al-Adha. Indeed, Allah prescribed for this Ummah two festivals: 'Id al-Fitr and 'Id al-Adha. This is because 'Id al-Fitr comes after a pillar of Islam, which is fasting, and 'Id al-Adha comes after a pillar of the greatest Hajj, which is standing at 'Arafah. This is the occasion. As for anything else, one does not celebrate events, days, or occasions.
