Ruling on combining prayers with a single dry ablution for the sick person
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q100: The questioner says: He combines the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha' prayers, performing tayammum for each obligatory prayer separately. Is that permissible for him or not?
A100: If it is difficult for the sick person to perform wudu, or if he is unable to perform wudu because of his illness, he should perform tayammum. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has granted a dispensation to the sick person who is unable to perform wudu to perform tayammum. If he performs tayammum and his state of purity is not broken, he may pray with that tayammum, even for several prayers. According to the correct view, its ruling is the same as that of wudu; if none of the things that break wudu occur, his tayammum remains valid, and he prays with it all the prayers that come due while he is in that state. However, if he is able to perform wudu, it is obligatory for him to perform wudu, even if he is sick. Even if he needs someone to help him with it, it is obligatory for him to perform wudu if he is able, even with assistance. As for combining prayers, it is permissible for the sick person to combine the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, or the Maghrib and Isha' prayers, in the time of one of them, either by combining them early or by combining them late, whichever is more convenient for him, if he needs to do so. But if he does not need to do so, it is obligatory for him to pray each prayer in its own time.
