The reciter: He (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the chapter on visiting the sick and accompanying the deceased: “It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Riyad as-Salihin 896 Narrated by Muslim”.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The hadith that al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in *Riyad al-Saliheen* in the chapter on visiting the sick and accompanying the deceased, narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 2569 meaning, and you are not in need of Me to the extent that I would visit you Sahih Muslim 2569 There is no problem with this hadith regarding the saying of the Exalted:
I was ill and you did not visit me, because it is impossible for Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, to be ill, for illness is an attribute of deficiency, and Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is free from all deficiency. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: “Glory to your Lord, the Lord of Majesty, above what they ascribe to Him.” But what is meant by illness here is the illness of one of His righteous servants and the awliya (close friends of Allah), Glorified and Exalted is He, who are His special ones. For this reason, it also came in the authentic, qudsi hadith: “Whoever opposes My wali (close friend of Allah), I have declared war upon him.” This means that the one who opposes the awliya (close friends of Allah) is at war with Allah, Mighty and Majestic, even if, in his own claim, he has not opposed Allah. But if he opposes His awliya (close friends of Allah), he has opposed Him and waged war against Him. Likewise, if one of the righteous servants of Allah falls ill, then Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is with him. For this reason, He said: “Did you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found Me with him?” He did not say “you would have found that with Me” as He said regarding food and drink, but rather He said “you would have found Me with him.” This indicates the closeness of the sick person to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. For this reason, the scholars said: The sick person is deserving of the acceptance of supplication if he supplicates for someone or supplicates against someone. In this is evidence for the recommendation of visiting the sick, and that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is with the sick person and with the one who visits him, based on His saying: “you would have found Me with him.” We have previously mentioned how one should visit the sick person and what the visitor should say to him and advise him about. O son of Adam, I was hungry and you did not feed Me, meaning, I asked you for food and you did not feed Me. It is well known that the Exalted does not ask for food for Himself, based on the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: “He feeds and is not fed.” He is rich in every respect and does not need food or drink. But a servant of Allah became hungry, and a person knew of it but did not feed him. Allah, the Exalted, said: “Did you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found that with Me,” meaning, you would have found its reward with Me, stored up for you, one good deed being ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, up to many times. In this is evidence for the recommendation of feeding the hungry, and that if a person feeds the hungry, he will find that with Allah. O son of Adam, I was thirsty, meaning, I asked you to give Me drink, but you did not give Me drink. He said: How could I give You drink when You are the Lord of the worlds? Meaning, you are not in need of food or drink. He said: Did you not know that My servant so-and-so, meaning, was thirsty or asked you for drink, and you did not give him drink? Did you not know that if you had given him drink, you would have found that with Me? In this is also evidence for the virtue of giving drink to one who asks you for it, and that you will find that with Allah, the Exalted, stored up, one good deed being ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, up to many times. The point of this hadith is the first phrase of it, which is His saying: “I was ill and you did not visit me.” In this is evidence for the recommendation of visiting the sick. And success is from Allah.
Verily, Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious will say on the Day of Resurrection: 'O son of Adam, I was ill but you did not visit Me.' He would say: 'O my Rubb, how could I visit you and You are the Rubb of the worlds?' Thereupon He would say: 'Did you not know that such and such a slave of Mine was ill but you did not visit him? Did you not realize that if you had visited him (you would have known that I was aware of your visit to him, for which I would reward you) you would have found Me with him? O son of Adam, I asked food from you but you did not feed Me.' He would submit: 'My Rubb, how could I feed You and You are the Rubb of the worlds?' He would say: 'Did you not know that such and such a slave of Mine asked you for food but you did not feed him? Did you not realize that if you had fed him, you would certainly have found (its reward) with Me? O son of Adam, I asked water from you but you did not give it to Me.' He would say: 'My Rubb, how could I give You (water) and You are the Rubb of the worlds?' Thereupon He would say: 'Such and such a slave of Mine asked you for water to drink but you did not give it to him. Did you not realize that if you had given him to drink you would have found (its reward) with Me?"
