The ruling on eating and drinking when in doubt about the dawn

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q337: The questioner asks: What is the ruling for one who is in doubt about the dawn, is he
allowed to eat and drink, or must he abstain until he is certain of its arrival? Please inform us, may Allah bless you?

A337: Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, says:
And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
. If he is certain that the dawn has arrived, it is forbidden for him to eat and drink, and it is obligatory for him to abstain. If he is not certain and remains in doubt: has the dawn arrived or not, then the precaution for him is to abstain from eating and drinking, as a matter of precaution and avoiding doubtful matters; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
. And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honorفمن اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
. So the best is that he should abstain, and leave off eating and drinking as long as he fears that the dawn has arrived.
