Explaining the Meaning of the Trial of Life and Death

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q218: The questioner Abu Usamah says: We recite in the final tashahhud, "We seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death, and we seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal." What is the trial of life and death? What is the Dajjal? And what are his characteristics?
A218: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded in the final tashahhud, before the taslim, to seek refuge from four things: from the punishment of Hellfire, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Dajjal. This command is for the sake of recommendation, so it is a confirmed sunnah. This is due to the importance and danger of these four matters. The trial of life means the severe trials and tests that befall a person in his life, which diminish his religion and cause him to abandon his religion. The trials are extremely dangerous; wealth is a trial, children are a trial, people are a trial, and the events that occur
and affect a person are all great trials to be feared; because a person is susceptible to trials and their effects, and he may abandon his religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be prompt in doing good deeds (before you are overtaken) by turbulence which would be like a part of the dark night. During (that stormy period) a man would be a Muslim in the morning and an unbeliever in the evening or he would be a believer in the evening and an unbeliever in the morning, and would sell his faith for worldly goods.بادروا بالأعمال فتنًا كقطع الليل المظلم، يصبح الرجل مؤمنًا، ويمسي كافراً، أو يمسي مؤمنًا، ويصبح كافراً، يبيع دينه بعرض من الدنيا
Sahih Muslim 118
As long as a person is alive, he is exposed to trials, so he asks Allah for safety from them. As for the trial of death, a person is tested at the time of dying, and Satan comes and makes death upon disbelief attractive to him. So he seeks refuge in Allah from the trial of Satan at death, and he may die upon other than Islam. As for the trial of the Dajjal, it is one of the signs of the Hour. The waiting for the lying Dajjal, who comes with great trials and many Satanic miracles that affect many people, and he claims to be Allah, that he is the Lord, and other great trials. Many people are destroyed because of him, except those whom Allah keeps firm upon the religion. His trial is a great trial. For this reason, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No prophet came but that he warned his nation against the Dajjalما من نبي إلا وحذر أمته من الدجال
And the one who warned most strongly against the Dajjal is our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
