What is the wisdom in seeking refuge from the trial of life and death and the False Messiah?

Question:
Our brother also asks and says: We have been commanded to seek refuge from the trial of life, the trial of death, and the False Messiah. It would be appreciated if you could explain this to us. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
This is prescribed for the believing man and the believing woman in every prayer. It is a recommended practice (sunnah) for every believer, male or female, to conclude his or her prayer by seeking refuge with Allah from the punishment of Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the trial of the False Messiah. It is established in many hadiths that he (peace and blessings be upon him), after reciting the tashahhud at the end of the prayer, before saying the taslim, would seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the trial of the False Messiah. He would also command this and say:
When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say:" O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal"إذا تشهد أحدكم؛ فليستعذ بالله من أربع، يقول: اللهم إني أعوذ بك من عذاب جهنم، ومن عذاب القبر، ومن فتنة المحيا والممات، ومن فتنة المسيح الدجال
Sahih Muslim 588a
So, it is prescribed for the believer, male or female, to seek refuge from these four things.
The majority of scholars held that this is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah muakkadah). It was narrated from Tawus, the eminent Tabi'i, what indicates that it is obligatory. It was also narrated from him that he ordered his son to repeat the prayer when he did not say it in the prayer. This indicates the emphasis of these supplications and that the believer should not leave them out in any prayer, whether voluntary or obligatory, before saying the taslim. He says:
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal.
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
And if he wishes, he says:
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the trial of the False Messiah.
.
They are great supplications. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
Anas reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to supplicate (in these words): " Our Lord, grant us the good in this world and the good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of Hell Fire."
Sahih Muslim 2690b
If he supplicates with that at the end of the prayer, it is good.
Likewise, in prostration, if he supplicates with this, there is nothing wrong with it, for prostration is a place for supplication. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The nearest a servant come to his Lord is when he is prostrating himself, so make supplication often.
Sunan Abi Dawud 875Sahih (Al-Albani)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Glorify your Lord in Ruku' (bowing posture) and exert yourself in supplication in prostration. Thus your supplications are liable to be accepted.
Riyad as-Salihin 1427
The meaning is: It is likely that your supplications will be answered. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. It seems he is asking for an example of the trial of death, the trial of the False Messiah, Shaykh Abdul Aziz, and the trial of life as well?

The Shaykh: A person is exposed to trials in his life and at the time of death. He may be exposed to sins in his life, he may be exposed to religious innovations (bid'ah), he may be exposed to disbelief (kufr) in Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and he may be tried either because of wealth, or because of desires and sins, or because of bad companions. He may fall into what angers Allah, such as disbelief, innovation, or sin, during his lifetime or at the time of death—may Allah grant us well-being. He may also be tried by the False Messiah if his time is delayed, for the False Messiah will appear in the end times, claiming to be a prophet, then claiming to be the Lord of the worlds. A great number of people will follow him—may we seek refuge in Allah—and they will be destroyed because of him.
So, a person asks his Lord to protect him from these matters, because he does not know whether he will be safe or not. He asks his Lord for well-being from the punishment of Hellfire, the punishment of the grave, the trial of life and death, and the trial of the False Messiah. He is in need of this supplication so that he is not tried in his life, nor at his death, and so that he does not encounter the False Messiah and be tried by him—may Allah keep us safe. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good.
