Ruling on advancing the Fajr prayer from its time for an excuse

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q175: The questioner says: I am a sick man. Sometimes I miss the Fajr prayer because I am unable to face the qiblah, and sometimes because I am unable to turn toward the qiblah, and because there is no one to hand me water or help me perform wudu'. Is it permissible for me to advance the Fajr prayer, or delay it from its time, or not?
A175: It is not permissible to advance the Fajr prayer from its time, nor is it permissible to delay it from its time. Rather, it is obligatory to perform it within its time according to one's ability. So the sick person who is in the condition described, who cannot face the qiblah and cannot perform wudu', prays according to his condition and does not take it out of its time. He does not say, "I will wait until someone comes to help me with wudu' and prepare the wudu'." This is not permissible. Rather, he prays according to his condition. If he fears the time will end, he prays according to his condition. If he is able to perform tayammum, he performs tayammum. If he is not able, he prays according to his condition. If he is able to face the qiblah, let him face it; otherwise, he prays in whatever direction he is able to pray. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
,
and He the Exalted said:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned.لاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا اكْتَسَبَتْ
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can.فإذا أمرتكم بأمر فأتوا منه ما استطعتم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7288
The conclusion is that it is not permissible to advance Fajr from its time, nor to delay it from its time. Rather, it is obligatory that it be performed in its time according to what is possible and within one's capacity.
