The Meaning of Intercourse During Fasting

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15516 )
Q: I am a thirty-year-old man, married with children, praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. And, praise be to Allah, I maintain the prayers. In every Ramadan, I pray 'Isha, tarawih, and tahajjud in
the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One day in the blessed month of Ramadan, on one of the nights, after tahajjud, I went out to the market to attend to a need before returning home. While I was buying some items, I happened to see a beautiful, captivating woman. I do not hide from you the fact that I was captivated by her, but I sought refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, and I went home without anything happening from me. The important thing is that after performing the Fajr prayer, when I wanted to sleep, I was unable to sleep because I was thinking about and imagining that woman. I was trying to sleep, and my wife was beside me. I sat and caressed my wife while imagining that woman. To clarify further for you, at that moment, my penis was between my wife's thighs. The important thing is that, without my realizing it, semen came out. At that moment, I wished the earth would split open and swallow me. This is what happened. Guide me on what I should do? I fasted that day, and I was told: You must fast two consecutive months, and I am unable to do that. I ask you to explain the expiation in detail. Is it permissible to give money instead of the sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) for feeding the poor? And how many riyals is each sa' equal to? I am confused. I ask you to reply to me quickly, because Shaytan is constantly whispering to me about things that only Allah knows about. And may Allah reward you a thousand times with good.

A: The intention of fasting Ramadan is not merely to abstain from food and drink, but it is the fasting of all limbs from what Allah has forbidden. Thus, the tongue fasts from backbiting, talebearing, and lying, and the eye fasts from looking at what Allah has forbidden
to look at, and the ear fasts from listening to what is forbidden. And Allah the Exalted said:
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
[An-Nur 24:30]
, so letting the gaze run free is one of the causes of stirring desires and falling into what is forbidden. Therefore, we advise you to fear Allah, and you must lower your gaze from looking at women who are not mahram (a relative one may not marry). As for what happened with your looking at that woman, then your caressing of your wife, and the emission of semen from you during the day of Ramadan, and then your making up that day – this making up is what is obligatory upon you, along with repentance to Allah, and there is no expiation upon you; because it is not obligatory except for intercourse in the private parts. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
