Ruling on shortening and combining the prayer for one who studies outside his or her home town

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q545: The questioner, Zahra from the Republic of Iraq, says: I am a student studying far from my family, and I live in a dormitory. The place where I study is about one hundred and fifty kilometers from my family, and I go to them on Thursdays and Fridays of every week. So, should my prayer be shortened or complete on the two days I spend with my family, and on the five days I spend in the dormitory? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.
A545: As for the days you spend in the dormitory, the five days, and the two days with your family, it is obligatory for you to complete the prayer. However, if you are traveling on the road between your place of study and your family’s home and your hometown, and as long as you are traveling on the road, it is permissible for you to shorten the four-rak'ah prayers, and it is permissible for you to combine the two prayers in a time that encompasses both, either by bringing them forward or delaying them. So, the dispensation of combining or shortening is only while traveling. As for staying in the place of study for five days, and your staying with your parents in your hometown, it is obligatory for you to complete the prayer.
