The questioner : My grandfather passed away ten days ago, and we told my grandmother to observe the waiting period after her husband’s death and not to leave the house, but she went out for a walk, and she is in the middle of her waiting period. What is required of her? Knowing that she is advanced in age, and we tried with her but she did not respond to our words. Direct her.

The Shaykh : I say to this woman that it is not permissible for her to go out for a walk while she is in the state of mourning, because the state of mourning obligates her to remain in the house where her husband died and in which she resides, and she must not go out except for a dire necessity at night or a pressing need during the day. A walk is neither a dire necessity nor a pressing need. Let her turn to Allah the Exalted regarding what she has done, and let her fulfill the obligatory duty upon her to remain in the home.
