Traveling with a group of pilgrims in which there is no mahram for her

Fatwa number ( 19261 )
Q: A sister who does not know Arabic asks for the opinion of the Shari'ah regarding the following: This sister was a Christian, then she embraced Islam, praise be to Allah, and her Islam was good. She came to the Kingdom with her husband a long time ago. Whenever she asked her husband to go to perform the obligatory Hajj, he refused, saying that he had debts. The husband insists on traveling abroad with her and the family every summer vacation, which forces him to borrow money. The husband has previously performed Hajj on his own. She asks if she can perform Hajj with a group of female friends and their husbands if she can provide the money? Is there any guidance from Your Eminence for the husband? We thank you greatly.
A : It is not obligatory for this woman to go to perform the obligatory Hajj unless a mahram with whom she can travel is available for her; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travelلا يحل لامرأة تؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر أن تسافر إلا ومعها ذو محرم
Sahih al-Bukhari 1088
, and it is not permissible for her to travel with a group of pilgrims in which there is no mahram for her because of this hadith; so she must wait until a mahram becomes available for her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
