Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "The Chapter on the Prohibition of a Woman Traveling Alone:
From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1339c Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Riyad as-Salihin 990 Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim".
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Saliheen*: "The Chapter on the Prohibition of a Woman Traveling Alone": meaning without a mahram. This is because a woman is deficient in intellect and religion, and is easily deceived; every person can deceive her, and every person can lead her astray. She is a fitnah (trial, discord or temptation), a trial for men, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, and he said: Mishkat al-Masabih 3085. Therefore, a woman is prevented from traveling without a mahram. The scholars differed on whether a woman is prevented from short travel or not. Some scholars said that she is prevented even from short travel, while others said that she is not prevented except from long travel. The correct view is that she is prevented from what people call travel; so whatever is called travel, it is not permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram, out of fear for her from fitnah, evil, and calamity. Then the author mentioned the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) regarding what indicates that it is forbidden for a woman to travel without a mahram. The apparent meaning of the hadith is that there is no difference between a young woman and an old woman, a beautiful woman and an ugly woman, one who has women with her and one who does not, and one who is safe and one who is not safe. The hadith is general. And if it is possible to find safety in a certain journey with certainty, that is not found in every journey. Since the matter is serious, a woman is strictly prevented from traveling without a mahram. Some people today have been lax in traveling without a mahram, especially in air travel, and also in group transport. This is an error and laxity in obeying Allah and His Messenger. It is not permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram, even by plane, even if her mahram sees her off until she boards the plane, and another mahram meets her in the other country; that is not permissible. Because no matter how much safety we assume, who will sit next to this woman? Because women on planes now are not separated from men; you find a woman next to a man. For this reason, we say that it is forbidden for a woman to travel without a mahram by plane, by car, by camel, by donkey, or on foot; all of that is forbidden. The mahram is one for whom she is permanently forbidden by lineage, marriage, or breastfeeding. This mahram is one for whom she is permanently forbidden by lineage, marriage, or breastfeeding. Allah the Exalted mentioned that in the Noble Qur'an, saying: [An-Nisa 4:23]: these are seven from lineage, [An-Nisa 4:23]: this is from breastfeeding, as well as the paternal aunt from breastfeeding and the maternal aunt from breastfeeding; all of them are mahrams, by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Sunan Ibn Majah 1937Sahih (Darussalam).
As for marriage ties, the husband's father and his grandfather from the side of the father or the mother are a mahram for the wife. The husband's son and the son of the husband's daughter, however far down the line, are also among the mahrams of the wife. So if the husband's grandfather travels with his son's wife, there is nothing wrong with it because he is a mahram. And if the husband's son, however far down the line, travels with his father's wife, there is nothing wrong because she is a mahram for him. As for what some common people think, that if a person saves a woman from destruction, he becomes a mahram for her, this has no basis. That is, some people say: if a woman drowns and a man comes and saves her, or a fire breaks out in the house and a man comes and saves her, some common people claim that he becomes a mahram for her. This is not correct and has no basis. The mahrams are seven by lineage, seven by breastfeeding, and four by marriage. As for the husband, it is known that he is a mahram because he is her husband. And success is from Allah.

No man must not be alone with a woman except in the presence of her (Mahram). No woman should travel except in company of a (Mahram)." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have been enrolled for such and such expedition, and my wife left for Hajj." He (ﷺ) said to him, "Go and perform Hajj with your wife."
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
