Fatwa number ( 15226 )
Q: I have an elderly mother, and she has lost her sight and wants to perform Hajj. Is it permissible for her to appoint a proxy for Hajj and 'Umrah ? She has not yet performed the obligatory Hajj, and she is approximately fifty years old. May Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for all Muslims.
A: It is obligatory for your mother to perform Hajj herself if she is able to afford it financially. Blindness does not prevent her from performing Hajj herself, nor does it justify appointing a proxy; because Allah the Mighty and Majestic said:[Ali 'Imran 3:97] the verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
