The Night of Decree: Is it seen in a dream or in a waking state?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa number ( 18376 )
Q1: Is the Night of Decree seen in a dream or in a waking state, is it specific or general, and what are its signs? I have heard that if Allah decrees the Night of Decree on the second day, the sun turns red and the weather becomes cloudy, but if that is the case, its goodness would encompass both the worshipper and the disbeliever.
A1: It is reported in authentic hadiths that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that on the morning of the Night of Decree, the sun rises without rays, and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was shown the Night of Decree in a dream and then made to forget it. The scholars differed regarding its specific identification, and the correct view is that it is not known. Allah the Exalted concealed it so that the servants would strive to seek it out through worship. It is sought in the last ten nights of Ramadan, and the odd-numbered nights are more emphasized; as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, seek it in the remaining nine, or the remaining seven, or the remaining five, or three, or the last nightالتمسوها في العشر الأواخر من رمضان، التمسوها في تسع بقين، أو سبع بقين، أو خمس بقين، أو ثلاث أو آخر ليلة
. As for a Muslim seeing it, he may see something in a dream. In the authentic hadith of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), men from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were shown the Night of Decree in a dream in the last seven nights of Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I see that your visions agree about the last seven days, so whoever is searching for it should do so in the last seven days.إني أرى رؤياكم قد تواطأت في السبع الأواخر، فمن كان متحريها فليتحرها في السبع الأواخر
Muwatta Malik 19:16
. However, if a Muslim sees it in his dream, he should not base his actions on his dream; because it may be from Satan, and because dreams and visions are not relied upon in legislation and rulings. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only said what he said about the dream of some of the Companions because their dreams agreed. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
