Fatwa No. ( 19101 )
Q: It has been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his hadith to the young men:
and whoever cannot then he should fastومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3208Sahih (Darussalam)
Is the intended meaning fasting for the blessed month of Ramadan throughout the year, or abstaining from forbidden things other than food? And was it reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he fasted the months of Rajab and Sha'ban before Ramadan, the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, and the beginning of Muharram? May Allah reward you.

A: First: The intended meaning of the fasting mentioned in the aforementioned hadith is:
Shari'ah fasting, which is abstaining from things that break the fast from the second dawn until the setting of the sun. Second: It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to fast in Sha'ban. It was narrated from A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) did not observe voluntary Saum (fasting) so frequently during any other month as he did during Sha'ban. He observed Saum throughout the month of Sha'ban.لم يكن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصوم شهرًا أكثر من شعبان، فإنه كان يصومه كله
Riyad as-Salihin 1247
, and in another wording:
He did not fast in any month as much as he fasted in Sha'ban; he used to fast it except for a little, rather he used to fast it in its entiretyما كان يصوم في شهر ما كان يصوم في شعبان، كان يصومه إلا قليلاً، بل كان يصومه كله
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. Third: We are not aware of any authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specifically regarding his fasting of the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, but fasting them is encouraged because it falls under the generality of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than those ten days.ما من أيام العمل الصالح فيهن أحب إلى الله من هذه الأيام العشر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 757Sahih (Darussalam)
Narrated by al-Bukhari and the people of the Sunan. As for the Day of 'Arafah specifically, its virtue is established by what came from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Fasting the Day of 'Arafah expiates two years: the past and the future, and fasting the Day of 'Ashura expiates one past yearصوم يوم عرفة يكفر سنتين: ماضية ومستقبلة، وصوم يوم عاشوراء يكفر سنة ماضية
Narrated by the group except al-Bukhari and al-Tirmidhi . Fourth: As for fasting in Muharram, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked:
Which fasting is best after Ramadan? He said: The month of Allah, Muharramأي الصيام أفضل بعد رمضان؟ فقال: شهر الله المحرم
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 3:350
Narrated by the group except al-Bukhari . And from Muharram is the fasting of 'Ashura, and its virtue is established by what we mentioned earlier from the hadith of Abu Qatadah . Fifth: No authentic hadith has been established encouraging the fasting of Rajab, and therefore it is not prescribed to single it out for fasting. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
