Q: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Young man, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire.
يا معشر الشباب من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج، فإنه أغض للبصر وأحصن للفرج، ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم فإنه له وجاء

, and I am unable to marry. The question is: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded those who are unable to marry to fast, so how is the fast to be performed? Is it for the duration of one's life, or how? We ask for clarification. Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings, and may Allah reward you with good.
A: It is obligatory for you, if you are unable to marry, to fear Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He), to be conscious of Him, to lower your gaze, and to fast as much as you are able. The best of fasting is to fast one day and break the fast the next, which is the fast of the Prophet of Allah Dawud (peace be upon him and upon our Prophet), as the Chosen One (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
