Fatwa number ( 14145 )
Q: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding the one who broke his fast out of necessity in Ramadan and forgot
to make up that day, and he remembered after about 4 years had passed How is the making up done here and in this case?
A: It is obligatory for the one who broke his fast in Ramadan while excused to make up the number of days he fasted, even if years have passed since then. However, he must expiate for the delay by feeding a poor person for each day, if the delay was without excuse. The amount is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, rice, or the like of the staple food of the country for each day. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
