Fatwa number ( 18557 )
Q: My grandfather is 88 years old, meaning he was born in 1907 CE, and he lived through the period of the 1954 CE war of liberation against the French occupation that afflicted Algeria at that time. He was then a soldier in the ranks of the National Liberation Army. The need for fighting compelled them to break their fast in the month of Ramadan and not fast, during the four months that succeeded one another in this period, i.e., four years. He was not the only one who did so; all the soldiers did not fast. He is now, as previously mentioned, 88 years old, and he has never made up a single day of these four Ramadan months in which he broke his fast . He asks: 1 - If he is able to pay an expiation for that, because he is advanced in age and unable to fast? 2 - If your Eminence’s answer is yes, how much can he pay for that in the Algerian dinar, and to whom will he pay it? 3 - Can he pay an expiation for this year’s Ramadan?
A: If the matter is as mentioned, that your grandfather is unable to make up the four Ramadans he broke, then your grandfather has to feed one poor person for every day
with a quantity of one and a half kilograms of the local staple food. It is not permissible to pay money in place of food. There is no harm in paying it all at once for the four months to some poor families, along with sincere repentance for the delay that occurred. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
