Fatwa number ( 15406 )
Q: I started menstruating when I was twelve years old, and I did not know that one who breaks the fast during Ramadan while menstruating must make up the fast. In fact, I used to break my fast even on the days when I was not menstruating. I did not know that fasting was obligatory for me. So what do you advise and guide me to do so that I may find peace of mind, for I constantly feel that I am falling short?
A: It is obligatory for you to repent and make up the number of days you fasted after the onset of menstruation, which is one of the signs of puberty. You must also feed one poor person for each day you make up due to the delay in making up the fast. The amount of food is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), which is equivalent to one and a half kilograms.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
