Q: My mother is approximately 65 years old. She was ignorant of the rulings regarding making up fasts missed due to menstruation from the time she reached puberty until her menstruation ceased, and she did not make them up . Her period used to last about four days. After she learned about making up fasts, she began fasting three days every month for approximately two years, and she continues in this state. Therefore, we ask Allah, then you, Your Eminence, to kindly provide a detailed answer to this question.
A: It is obligatory for your mother to make up the number of days she missed from Ramadan since she reached puberty. In addition to making them up, she must feed one poor person for every day she makes up, because she delayed making them up until another Ramadan, provided she is able to feed them. If her fasting of three days every month is with the intention of making up what she owes, then it will be counted for her; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 1 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
