The sixth question of the fatwa number ( 18637 )
Q6: My maternal grandmother passed away, and she had missed days of fasting from Ramadan that she did not know the number of. She used to break her fast while menstruating or during post-natal bleeding, and also, in the past, she would break her fast due to extreme fatigue and hardship. However, she did not make up the days she had missed because she was ignorant of the ruling. After she became aware of the Islamic ruling, she was advanced in age and no longer able to fast. She passed away, may Allah have mercy on her, without having made them up. Also, my mother does not know the exact number of days her mother missed. Is it sufficient for her to fast on her behalf days like the white days (the 13th, 14th, and 15th of each lunar month) and Mondays and Thursdays, intending the reward for her, hoping it will benefit her with Allah the Mighty and Majestic? And is it sufficient for her to expiate for these unknown days by estimating a specific number and paying the expiation along with the fasting?
A6: If you are certain that your mother did not make up the fasting she owed, by
her informing you of this after she became advanced in age, then it is prescribed for you to fast on her behalf with the intention of making up the fasts, after you have ascertained the number of days she owed, along with feeding one poor person for every day you make up, the amount being one and a half kilograms of the local staple food, for the delay until the second Ramadan; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 1147 , and the guardian is the close relative. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
